Vasily Gordeevich Yakovenko (1920 — 1943) was a Soviet artillery officer, Hero of the Soviet Union (1944, posthumously), participant in the Great Patriotic War as commander of the artillery battery of the 262nd Infantry Regiment of the 184th Dukhovshchinsky Rifle Division of the 39th Army of the Kalinin Front, lieutenant. He was born in the Zhytomyr region of Ukraine. He died liberating Smolensk from the Nazi invaders two days before the liberation. A monument to Yakovenko has been erected in the town of Dukhovshchyna. One of the streets of the city is named after him. In 1972, the fishing trawler Vasily Yakovenko was launched. In Kiev, on the territory of the Leninskaya Kuznitsa factory, where the Hero worked, a memorial plaque was erected to him
